Cajù Records is the result of the desire and commitment of Peter Kauffmann who has always believed in Peppe Consolmagno and his projects.  At present four CDs all published in April 2005: Timbri dal Mondo, Kalungumachine, Ishk Bashad and the prized Vasconcelos-Salis-Consolmagno.  A small editorial effort with the intent of giving body and voice to works that are worth listening to and in which Peppe Consolmagno is engaged in facing different musical and personal situations. Three of these CDs are the result of live registrations on two tracks in digital.  This technique has the advantage, within limits, of letting the listener live a unique, unrepeatable moment, without tricks or without cheating, with nothing planned around a table.  Even the graphics were devised to give “visibility” to the music, above all for Timbri dal Mondo, that contains

a useful leaflet in which every piece is described with a brief text and a splendid photo.

Peppe Consolmagno & Timbri dal Mondo (Cajù 4558-2)

Peppe Consolmagno’s first CD as a soloist.  “Timbri dal Mondo” is the result of the recording of two tracks of his concert at the Festival Mediterraneo and roundabout Sulmona in 1999.  Only two tracks were recorded in a studio in 2003, maintaining however a live-like structure in accordance with the rest of the CD and the ways with which these compositions are performed live. The live recording on two tracks has the advantage, albeit within its limits, of letting the listener experience a unique and unrepeatable moment, without tricks or deceptions.  Peppe Consolmagno’s music allows one to enter into a creative sound area and suggests images related to childhood, landscapes and imaginative visions.  The starting point in his compositions is to first let the instruments “speak”  and then “converse” with them.  Peppe has always been marked for limpid sound and the strong research of timbre.  During his solo performance he uses, together with the percussion instruments made by him and his voice, echoes and loop all created live without the use of pre-recorded backgrounds.  For this reason every concert is a new experience.  The tracks Manaus , Segredo da Notte, Uekke, Uekke for example emphasize this philosophy.  Lua merits a special mention because of its uniqueness.  In this composition Peppe uses numerous cymbals of various dimensions, placed in the shape of a tree.  Everything is based on the exultation and the following on of the harmonics of each cymbal which, together with the voice and staying with ones eyes closed, give the impression of listening to a keyboard.  The CD “Timbri dal Mondo” contains a handy leaflet on which every track is described briefly together with a splendid photo.  “Timbri dal Mondo” has been published by Cajù Records, cat. no. 4558-2

Peppe Consolmagno e Antonio Marangolo  “Kalungumachine” (Cajù 4558-3)

Kalungumachine” is the CD by Peppe Consolmagno and Antonio Marangolo, already published in 1994 under the label Iktius. For its tenth anniversary it has been reprinted by Cajù Records, catalogue number 4558-3. The photo on the front cover reproduces an Amazon dawn; the one on the back “Encontro das agues” the confluence of the two rivers that form the river Amazon.  The photos were taken by Peppe Consolmagno in 1985. This CD is the result of only three afternoons spent in Bayer Studio in Mordano in the province of Bologna , in a pleasant and professional atmosphere.  Two musicians Peppe and Antonio in perfect harmony and willing to find a meeting point.

Ishk Bashad  "Live at Womad 2001" (Cajù 4558-4)

This CD was recorded live on two tracks at the prestigious Festival Womad organised by Peter Gabriel and held in Palermo in 2001.  The group Ishk Bashad were in top form as is shown by this CD, about 45 minutes of music without over recording or particular manipulation.  The oud of Mouna Amari blended in softly but side by side with the sinuous and magical sounds of Rao’s violin, while the sounds of Consolmagno’s ethereal but accurate percussions joined those of Grifeo’s piano (even if it was digital) which brought it all together splendidly.

Vasconcelos - Salis - Consolmagno  (Cajù 4558-5)

At the moment the last CD of the series and prized piece of this small record label.  Even this work is the result of the digital registration on two tracks of the concert of Nana Vasconcelos, Antonello Salis and Peppe Consolmagno held in Rome at Fandango Jazz Festival – La Palma – on 15th July 2004.  The characteristic of this CD is the fact that it seals the first meeting and, above all, the first concert of the trio.  Nana and Antonello had already performed together twenty years ago but with Peppe it was the first time, at least for Antonello.  It is fascinating to know that they only met the day before the concert: just time to say hello and go to the Rai to take part in the broadcast Stanza della Musica of Rai Radio tre Suite.  The next day, in only one and half hours, they managed to prepare the evening programme.  Very little time available but the ability of the three musicians, comforted by “knowing how to live hand to mouth” as Salis puts it, made it possible to participate in a memorable evening and have the possibility today of listening to that moment thanks to this CD.  The music is beautiful, the performance is good, the sounds are good, to which is added Marco Facondini’s knowledgeable work of digital post-production  (TanAcoustics Studio).  The trio Vasconcelos, Salis and Consolmagno is based on ductility, on musical creativity and naturalness, through which the three musicians form every fragment of their experiences and musical influences.  A particularly intriguing meeting, between composition and improvisation, tradition and modernity.
